Around 40 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a pallet storage yard in Plympton overnight.

Crews were called to the fire at Coypool Road just after 9 o clock.

The yard was directly behind the speedway arena and a meeting was taking place there as firefighters arrived. The crowds were evacuated safely.

At its peak, the fire was around 30 metres by 20 metres - it also involved an electrical sub station, which controls the signals on the railway line.

The fire has now been extinguished and an investigation into its cause is underway.
