871 sex offences reported last year

871 sexual abuse offences against were reported to police in Devon and Cornwall last year.

36 of those involved children who were five years old or younger.

They include various sex crimes such as rape and abuse of children through prostitution and pornography.

149 victims in the Devon and Cornwall Police force area hadn't reached secondary school age and 41 were male.

The NSPCC says it's concerning that over the last four years there's been no significant decrease in reported offences.

Jon Brown, Head of the Sexual Abuse programme, says different approaches to tackling the problem are needed like increased deterrents, appropriate prison sentences for offenders and better treatment for victims.

Devon and Cornwall police say it's about numerous agencies including charities and social services working together to bring down incidents of this type of crime.

However, DI Charles Pitman says we have to be careful when simply looking at statistics and that more context is needed.
