Barbican gasworks due to come an end

A seven month programme of gasworks around the Barbican is due to come to an end today.

It's the first of a number of programmes of work finishing this week - a new link road on Embankment lane also opens tomorrow.

Since April, Wales and West utilities have been replacing old metal pipes with plastic ones as part of a safety drive across the country.

Many businesses in the area say there wasn't enough communication with Wales and West, especially at the beginning of the project.

Some say they've lost thousands of pounds in takings during the work and that signage was inadequate.

Wales and West say they did their best to minimise disruption by liaising with businesses and holding weekly drop in sessions.

Chair of the Waterfront Partnership, David Wheeler, says there is some concern that customers lost during that time, may not return. He says an audit will be needed to measure the full impact on those businesses but that many are filing claims for compensation.

Wales and West Utilities say they are considering those requests for compensation on an individual basis.
