City awaits news on government grant to boost high street

Plymouth's city centre company will find out in May whether they have been successful in securing one hundred thousand pounds of government funding.

They have applied following retail guru Mary Portas' report on boosting the high street.

The money would be used to create a town team including the city council, businesses and locals, who would contribute their ideas.

There would also be a big focus on encouraging retailers in to fill empty shops - at the moment, Derrys, Woolworths, TJ Hughes and several other big stores remain empty.

Mary Portas also supports more free parking - city centre manager Clint Jones says that's highly unlikely as Plymouth is already competitive with its parking prices, which cover the cost of any repairs or maintenance work needed.
