Council plans to save £8m go before cabinet

A draft budget showing how Plymouth city council plan to save eight million pounds over the next financial year will go before the cabinet today.

The city council needs to save thirty million pounds over three years and this budget forms part of those plans.

The bulk of the savings, at almost 4 million pounds, will come from adult social care, sport and culture, and environmental services - although the local authority insists this won't lead to any further care home closures.

Back office roles and corporate support face cuts of more than 2 million, with children's services having to save more than a million pounds.

Further job cuts haven't been ruled out - there's already been a management restructure but Councillor Ian Bowyer, who's in charge of finance, has said they're currently only half way through plans to cut the 500 posts detailed earlier in the year.

The details of the budget will be finalised in February.
