Final goodbye for scrapped Plymouth frigate

The crew of a Plymouth based frigate will bid a final farewell to her today at an official decommissioning ceremony.

HMS Cumberland is one of four local vessels being scrapped as part of government cut backs.

The type 22 frigate hit the headlines when she was sent to Libya earlier this year while on her way home to be scrapped.

She then rescued 454 people from the country and helped to enforce the NATO arms embargo.

But she then sailed home in April and returned to Plymouth for the final time.

Today a religious ceremony at the naval base will signal the end of her career - the ships' crew will also take part in a parade.

HMS Cornwall, Chatham and Campbeltown were also scrapped as part of the defence review.
