Firms to find out about BID projects next month

Waterfront firms will be given details of the first projects which will be tackled by the new Business Improvement District in around a month's time.

On Monday, it was revealed that firms had voted in favour of paying an extra levy to have a greater say on how the area is run.

For around half the businesses that will mean a payment of between one hundred and five hundred pounds a year.

The Waterfront Partnership will hold its first big meeting in early April when it will begin to select its new advisory board.

Chair of the BID Professor David Wheeler says as well as this September's marine festival, they want to make the waterfront a more exciting place to be by having events planned for every other weekend.

389 businesses voted and just over 100 said no.

Many had said the city council should fund any improvements and that they didn't believe they would see value for money.

John Buckley is the landlord of the Navy Inn on Southside street - he's worried about government proposals for a late night levy on pubs and clubs which could mean they have to pay twice.
