GP consortium ahead, says board member

Plymouth's GP consortium says it's already implementing some of the changes recommended in a national report on the future of the NHS.

The Future forum suggested that consultants and nurses should be involved in making financial decisions as well as GPs.

Sentinel says Plymouth consultants already visit them to discuss patients and their treatment.

The consortium is due to take over from the current primary care trust at commissioning services in 2013.

Dr Helen Thomas says they are already working to provide more patients with care in the community by giving them the option to go to their GP clinic in some cases rather than the hospital.
