HMS Campbeltown sails into Plymouth for final time

Another naval ship will return to Plymouth this afternoon to be decommissioned after 22 years service.

HMS Campbeltown is one of the four Devonport-based type 22 frigates which are being scrapped under the government's defence review.

Her last port of call was St Nazaire to mark the 69th anniversary of Operation Chariot, when the vessel was packed with explosives and rammed into the dock to put the site out of action for the rest of World War two.

Her crew were awarded the largest number of Victoria Cross medals for a single operation.

The ship's return marks the start of a number of decommissioning events including an official ceremony in April.

Some of the crew do have other posts to go to, but others could face redundancy.
