HMS Plymouth set to be scrapped

The warship HMS Plymouth will be scrapped if permission is granted by the Environment Agency.

The city's namesake is currently berthed in Liverpool, but as no permanent home could be found, the port has now signed a contract to break her up with a company in Turkey.

Any items of historic significance are being removed and Plymouth city council is looking into whether it can display any of them at the museum.

Andy Hayler from the HMS Plymouth preservation trust served on the vessel in the 1960s and says it's a shame they couldn't find a place for her in her home city, as Plymouth doesn't make the most of its maritime heritage.

The city council has said that given the severe pressure on its budgets, it has not been in a position to save the ship.
