Labour take control of city council

Labour have taken control of Plymouth city council, with a majority of five seats.

St Budeaux, Stoke, Budshead, Eggbuckland and Moorview were taken from the Conservatives and Southway was snatched from UKIP.

Labour argue disillusionment with government cut backs, the decision to build an incinerator in Plymouth and the agreement reached to close the airport helped them to win.

New city council leader Tudor Evans has not said he will overturn the decision on the incinerator, but says the recent rejection of the ash processing plant in Buckfastleigh does throw up some interesting questions. He says they won't let it be built in Plymouth and if MVV can't find somewhere to build it, work on the incinerator will have to stop.

Former Conservative city council leader Vivien Pengelly is now set to lead the opposition - she says that some of the arguments about the incinerator were inaccurate and that it will still go ahead.
