Local MPs clash over NHS reforms

Plymouth MPs have clashed over the government's controversial reforms to the NHS.

The Health and Social Care Bill will be voted on by Parliament this afternoon - it includes proposals to allow more private firms to compete to provide services.

GPs would also be given the power to commission services once the primary care trusts are scrapped.

Conservative MP for South West Devon Gary Streeter supports the reforms and says the NHS must change to cope with the demands of the future with people living much longer

Labour MP for Plymouth Moorview Alison Seabeck says some changes do need to be made as the NHS is wasteful in places, but the reforms the government have proposed are too extreme. She claims it's putting too much pressure on GPs, many of whom don't have the level of experience needed.
