A man has been jailed for eight years for the rape of a young woman in Plymouth.

The attack happened in the early hours of New Year's Day in College Lane in Mutley.

23 year old Michael Andrade de Souza pleaded guilty and will be deported at the end of his eight year sentence.

Officers have praised the victim for her presence of mind - the first part of the attack was recorded on her mobile phone.

Police have reminded women to walk home with others after nights out and only to get into bona fide taxis, but they stress that incidents of this kind are rare.
