More than 250 posts shed at Derriford Hospital over last year

Derriford Hospital has shed more than 250 posts in the last financial year.

The Plymouth hospitals NHS Trust had to save thirty one million pounds due to a drop in funding and an increase in costs.

This doesn't mean 258 people were made redundant - many staff have been redeployed to other jobs and more than 100 vacancies weren't filled.

Overall that means around 76 posts were made redundant.

Unison have said morale at the hospital is low and that many staff fell stressed and overstretched.

Meanwhile the GMB claims a dispute is brewing between its members at Derriford hospital and a private contractor there over changes to pay and conditions.

Serco has been running the helpdesk, ward housekeeping, catering, portering and cleaning since september 2009.

Plymouth's GMB union claims changes to the terms and conditions of workers' employment would see some face drastic pay cuts - and become some of the lowest paid workers in the city.

It's also claimed Serco cut off formal dialogue with the union back in April, which the GMB says means their members are being denied representation at work.
