Net illegally dropped on HMS Scylla highlights wider issue, says aquarium

The publicity surrounding a net illegally set on a wreck off Whitsand Bay has highlighted the issue of ghost fishing, according to the National Marine Aquarium.

HMS Scylla was out of bounds for four months after a net became tangled on it in November, making diving conditions dangerous.

This week, volunteer divers have helped to remove it but aquarium bosses say it's still a problem with shipwrecks and reefs elsewhere.

Managing director Dr David Gibson says a change in legislation back in January though will make it easier to track boats that illegally drop fishing nets in future.

The new rules mean 'static fishing gear' will have to be clearly labelled with the boat that set it.
