Plymouth marine killed in Afghanistan laid to rest

The funeral of a Plymouth marine killed in Afghanistan takes place today - one day after what would've been his 29th birthday.

Sam Alexander died with his colleague Ollie Augustin in an explosion in Afghanistan on May 27th - both were serving with 42 Commando.

The two marines were on patrol in the Nad'Ali district of Helmand Province.

Marine Alexander had been awarded the military cross on a previous tour of the country.

The 28 year old, who lived in Plymouth, leaves behind his wife Claire and their baby son Leo. Claire says her husband was her rock and her best friend - and will be missed very much.

A full military service will be held this afternoon at St Andrews Church.
