Plymouth's Chief Superintendent backs Sobriety Orders

The man in charge of Plymouth's policing has said new plans to introduce sobriety orders in the city are not about simply saving money.

The city is going to be one of five areas to pilot the idea from the Home Office - it means that people involved in alcohol related disorder could be allowed to escape court if they agree to stop drinking and to be monitored by the police.

Officers say at the moment people involved in alcohol related disorder are repeatedly before the courts because they never address the reasons for their behaviour.

Chief Superintendent Andy Bickleigh has said they have to try new ways of tackling binge drinking and its effects on health, crime and community.
