Residents near incinerator site needed for 'Community Trust'

Residents near the site of a proposed incinerator in Devonport are being encouraged to join a community organisation and make their voices heard.

The waste plant got planning permission just before Christmas and last week was given the permit it needs to operate.

One of the conditions of MVV's planning permission is that a community fund be set up - £150,000 will be paid into it each year for 25 years.

The money will be spent on offsetting some of the impacts of the facility but a new North Yard Community Trust will decide how and what it's spent on.

Michelle Virgo from Zebra Collective, which will gather the views needed to set up the trust, says there's a range of things the money could be spent on like amenity spaces, sustainable transport projects, projects to improve health and welbeing, or supporting local businesses.

A meeting will be held at the Tamar View Community centre tonight from 6pm until 9pm.
