Teaching unions say they hope to avoid further strikes

Plymouth teaching unions say they're trying to avoid further industrial action.

It comes as the city's schools return for the new academic year.

A one-day strike in June closed around 60 Plymouth schools either partially or completely.

Under the government proposals, teachers' pensions would be based on their average career salary in future instead of their salary when they retire, but it's the increase in contributions unions are particularly concerned about.

It's claimed some teachers could be thousands of pounds worse off per year.

The Department for Education launched a consultation on the proposed changes to teachers' contributions to their pensions at the end of July and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) say they're awaiting the outcome of that before they decide whether to take any further action.
