Waterfront BID 'undemocratic', says landlord

Plymouth's independent businesses will be worst hit by the Waterfront Partnership's proposed 'business improvement district'.

That's according to a local pub landlord, who claims they haven't been given enough information about the BID and yet, they're being asked to vote on it.

The Waterfront Partnership has launched a consultation on the plans, which would mean every business in the area paying a levy for a greater say on how the area is run.

That money would buy in extra services like street cleaning, extra security and marketing the area.

Tam McPherson is the owner of the Clipper Inn on Union Street. He says many of them still have unanswered questions because they don't know the boundaries of the BID area, how many businesses are involved and their rateable value.

Chair of the Waterfront Partnership, David Wheeler, says the whole idea of the consultation is to develop these specifics, with the help of local businesses.

They're being invited to a meeting next week as part of the consultation.
