Woman made redundant by city council says approach could've been better

A woman made redundant by Plymouth City Council as part of a drive to save millions of pounds says there would've been better ways of approaching the cuts.

The local authority aims to cut 500 posts as part of plans to make savings of more than 30 million pounds.

Nicola Marshall took redundancy when her pay grade disappeared as part of the restructure.

She worked in the revenue, benefits and customer services area - and says she was advised to reapply for a lower pay grade.

Nicola has now started up her own reflexology business but says she felt like she had to fight to get redundancy and was extremely lucky to have another skill.

In a statement, the city council say they're unable to comment on individual cases but that 353 posts have so far been cut - 63 of which were through compulsory redundancies.

They add that they do try to avoid compulsory redundancies by redeploying staff to other posts but this is not always possible and that where redundancies are made, this is done following the correct procedures.
